Happy Birthday to me!

Today, April 30th, marks the 140th birthday of me, your humble blogger, Fielding H. Yost.  But as you can see by my picture, I don't look a day over...whatever age I am in this photo.

As you probably know, I was born in Fairview, West Virginia and actually went to college in Ohio at what was then called Ohio Normal (now Northern) University (although we all know there is nothing normal about Ohio).  I later enrolled at West Virginia where I played tackle and never, ever sang nor listened to Josh Groban.

But my life really began in 1901 when I was hired as Michigan's head coach.  I coached there until 1923, then again from 1925-1926.  While in A2, I went 165-29-10, a winning percentage of .833, and won 6 national titles with nary a free tattoo given to any of my players.

After my coaching days were over, I stayed on at Michigan as AD until 1940.

Besides my kick-ass record, I invented the position of linebacker, co-created the first ever bowl game, the 1902 Rose Bowl, with then legendary UM athletic director Charles Baird, invented the fieldhouse concept that bears my name, and supervised the building of the first on-campus building dedicated to intramural sports so that frat guys could have a place to feel like athletes before going back to their houses and puking all weekend.

DID YOU KNOW

I also started the tradition of U-M coaches screwing over West Virginia.  According to Wikipedia:
In October 1896, after his team lost three times to Lafayette in home games played on three different fields over the course of three days, Yost became a remarkable personification of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." He transferred in mid-season to join Coach Parke H. Davis' national championship team at Lafayette. Just a week after playing against Davis in West Virginia, Yost was playing for Davis in Lafayette's historic 6–4 win over the Penn Quakers.

The fortuitous timing of Yost's appearance on the Lafayette roster did not go unnoticed by Penn officials. They called it "the Yost affair." The Philadelphia Ledger quoted Yost as saying that he came to Lafayette only to play football. The fact that Yost appeared in a Lafayette uniform only once, in the Penn game, and that he returned to West Virginia within two weeks of the contest did not help appearances. He assured all concerned that he would return to Lafayette for at least three years of study.  But 1897 found him no longer a student or a player, but a coach.

Your Morning Fashion & Beauty Report: Creator of Kate Middleton's see-through dress launches collection. Leighton Meester stars for Vera Wang. And...

I swore I wasn't going to write a word about the royal wedding, especially after Booth Moore's great coverage of the wedding fashion here at All the Rage early — really early! — Friday morning. But then this marginally related tidbit caught my eye: Charlotte Todd, who created the see-through dress that reportedly got Prince William's attention when it was modeled by Kate Middleton back when they were in school, launched her own design firm on the eve of the wedding. The 12-piece collection includes a tube dress similar to the one Kate modeled. Of course. [Telegraph]

There have actually been some other weddings lately, btw. LeAnn Rimes marrying Eddie Cibrian in a Malibu backyard, for instance. Rimes wore a handmade Reem Acra gown featuring all-over pearls in a range of sizes and white paillettes on nude silk chiffon. She accessorized with snakeskin shoes. [People]

Ameester “Gossip Girl's” Leighton Meester introduced Vera Wang's latest fragrance, Lovestruck, to a standing-room-only crowd at the designer's Manhattan apartment this week. Meester will appear in ads for the fragrance,  which is being released in the U.K in June and the U.S. in August. [WWD]

The multitasking Karl Lagerfeld's latest endeavor? He created a hotel suite at La Réserve in Paris constructed entirely of chocolate, complete with a life-sized likeness of model Baptiste Giabiconi lounging on a quilted white bedspread edged in delicate broderie anglaise. Master chocolate-maker Patrick Roger reportedly used 1.5 tons of chocolate for everything, right down to the carpet and the books on the bedside table. Why? Publicity for ice cream brand Magnum. The American Apparel and Footwear Assn.'s Image Awards, held Wednesday in New York, raised $1.1 million for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Among the honorees: Ruben Toledo won the Fashion Maverick Award; David Koch, the Humanitarian Award; William Rast was named brand of the year; Ugg Australia, footwear brand of the year; and Neiman Marcus, retailer of the year. Mark Weber, chief exec of LVMH Inc. and chairman of Donna Karan International, took home man of the year honors. [WWD]

Was it just a few days ago that a huge hubbub blew up when the J. Crew catalog featured a photo of creative director Jenna Lyons painting her young son's toenails in what many thought was a sweet moment of mother-son play and others thought was a sign of the end of civilization? Now designer Isaac Mizrahi confesses: He always paints his toenails, he said at a fundraiser for Good Shepherd Services, a children's charity he's involved with. Let's see, he is a successful, creative person who mentors disadvantaged children — despite having painted nails. [The Cut]

02547GHFDJ12

Ever since the engagement, royal watchers have been placing bets on which designer will make Kate Middleton’s $50000 wedding gown. Katrina Szish spoke with Rebecca Jarvis on Kate’s dress and what it means for the future of bridal gowns.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Evening Dress: Alexander McQueen!

After her wedding ceremony and luncheon, Catherine Middleton changed from her Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding dress into an evening gown by the same designer for her nighttime reception hosted by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. The strapless satin gown featured a sweetheart neckline, circle skirt, and an embellished waistband. The new Duchess of Cambridge paired the dress with a cropped white mohair cardigan. Prince William changed from his Army uniform into a tuxedo. This morning, the couple left Buckingham Palace for a weekend getaway in the United Kingdom. The Prince will be returning to work as a search and rescue pilot and they will celebrate their honeymoon overseas at a later time, the Clarence House said in a statement.
