1980 Winter Olympics

Some people might not know about the Miracle on Ice, but I will tell you about it. The reason why they call it the Miracle on jIce is because the United States' hockey team had not beaten the Soviet Union since the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley. Since that time the Soviets won the gold in hockey in 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976.

The United States team coach Herb Brooks conducted tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1979 and he chose 26 players. But the Olympic rules say you can only have 20 players so he had seven months to cut 6 players. But some people might not know Herb actually played on the 1960 team. But a week before the games Coach Reilly called Herb into his office and said that he was going home. A week after he was cut he watched his team win the gold medal over the Soviet Union. Before the Olympics started the US national team played the Soviets in Madison Square Garden and the US lost 10-3. The US in pool play they had four wins and one tie. The U.S. team beat Norway 5–1, Romania 7–2, West Germany 4–2, and the one tie they tied the Swedes 2-2.

Before the game, Brooks read his players a statement he'd written out on a piece of paper, telling them that "You were born to be a player. You were meant to be here. This moment is yours." The first period score was 2-2. The second period score was Soviets 3 USA 2. The third period score was USA 4 Soviets 3. . Sportscaster Al Michaels, who was calling the game on ABC along with former Montreal Canadians goalie Ken Dryden , picked up on the countdown in his broadcast, and delivered his famous call: Eleven seconds, you've got ten seconds, the countdown going on right now! Morrow , up to Silk. Five seconds left in the game. Do you believe in miracles? YES!
