Hyperbole vs Understatement.

Some of you may be wondering, whats a hyperbole? Or Whats an understatement? Or Whats the difference? A hyperbole is an excessive exaggeration. An example of hyperbole would be saying "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse" This is hyperbole because you couldn't really devour a full horse, it's just an exaggeration. Understatement is the opposite of hyperbole. It is saying something that is way less severe then the actual situation. An example of this is in Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio is stabbed, and is mortally wounded. He says: "'Tis but a scratch". This, obviously, is not a scratch--he is mortally wounded.
