Many people are tired at school and do not know how many hours of sleep you need to get to be at your peak performance. The amount of sleep necessary goes relative to your age. To be 100% when you are an adolescent, you need 9-10 hours, whereas when you are an adult you need 7-8 hours. If you get less than the recommended sleep time, you will feel tired, be less alert, and will not do nearly as well in school. The reason your brain does not operate as well under sleep deprivation is because neurons in the cerebral cortex need to be regenerated through sleeping. Oversleeping, however, can be just as dangerous as not getting enough. Studies show that oversleeping leads to depression, and can be linked to diabetes and heart disease. People who oversleep also have a lower social and economic status on average then those who don't.
